A basement can become a family room, office, gym, guest area, laundry zone or extra storage. The best layout depends on natural light, ceiling height, stairs, mechanical equipment and where plumbing can realistically go.
Finishes that make basements feel brighter
Light wall colors, durable flooring, smooth ceilings, clean trim and better lighting can make a basement feel less like a basement. Moisture-resistant materials are worth considering in lower-level spaces.
Plan bathrooms early
If a basement bathroom is part of the project, plan it before flooring and drywall. Plumbing location, ventilation and waterproofing details can affect the whole renovation.
